Germany Adjusts Silver Content in Euro Collector Coins Amid Market Volatility
The German government is reducing the quantity of silver in two limited-edition euro collector coins to mitigate speculation and manage budgetary pressures, the finance ministry stated on Monday. This decision follows a period of extreme volatility in silver prices, which have swung dramatically despite retreating from recent peaks.
Over the last year, silver prices climbed sharply as investors rushed to avoid missing a rally fueled by geopolitical tensions and trade disputes. This prompted multiple surges in retail demand for silver bars and coins.
The adjustment will apply to the 35-euro and 50-euro denominations. Both coins will contain a lower proportion of silver and a higher proportion of copper, resulting in a slight overall weight reduction.
According to a ministry statement shared on social media, the modification is a direct response to the sharp fluctuations in silver prices. The goal is to prevent the coins from becoming targets for speculation based on precious metal trends and to ensure their issuance remains financially viable.
Silver, valued both as a precious and industrial metal, experienced wild price swings. Retail investor enthusiasm, momentum-driven buying, and constrained physical supply pushed its value up by 147% in 2025. The metal reached a record high of $121.6 per troy ounce on January 29 before a swift decline triggered by technical selling and stop-loss orders. It was trading around $71 on Monday.
Recent geopolitical developments, including the Iran conflict, have exerted downward pressure on silver, gold, and other precious metals. Investors are scaling back expectations for interest rate cuts amid concerns that the situation could stoke inflation and dampen global growth prospects.
For the 35-euro collector coin, the silver content will be slashed by 46%. Its weight will decrease from 18 grams to 17 grams. Next year's edition of this coin is planned to commemorate the 150th anniversary of German author Hermann Hesse.
