Market Update: Crude Oil Faces Volatility as Middle Eastern Tensions Rise; Gold Prices Decline

On April 20, the commodity markets saw an uptick, with crude oil responding to fresh geopolitical tensions. After a brief relief rally fueled by hopes for reduced strains in the Middle East, caution returned following escalated tensions between the US and Iran over the weekend. Brent crude oil traded around $95 per barrel, marking a rise of approximately 5 percent, recovering from notable declines experienced last Friday.

The previous week had seen prices drop after Iran announced that the Strait of Hormuz was 'completely open.' However, recent disruptions in this vital shipping route have reignited concerns, as the two-week ceasefire nears its expiration. Market participants are closely monitoring the potential for US-Iran negotiations to resume following unsuccessful initial discussions in Islamabad.

In the precious metals sector, gold witnessed a sharp decline, falling by as much as 1.9 percent to dip below $4,740 an ounce, effectively reversing last week's gains. This downturn was influenced by comments from Donald Trump regarding the US Navy's actions against an Iranian-flagged cargo ship, coupled with Tehran's warning that vessels approaching the key waterway could be seen as violating the ceasefire. Spot gold decreased by 1.4 percent to $4,763.66 an ounce in Singapore, while silver also fell by 1.7 percent to $79.50 an ounce, with platinum and palladium following suit. Meanwhile, the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index edged up by 0.2 percent.
